Story:

A well made film, the story is about the brilliant and shrewd lawyer Krishnan (RK) who has the ability to bail out his clients from the toughest of cases using his brains but then he ends up giving them his own form of justice after the legal sentences are given. He has a strong reason to do that since he sees his father, also a known lawyer who saves his clients from a case and ends up getting killed by them. Life goes on until Krishnan is approached by the parents of nine college girls who have been accused of torturing and murdering Chintamani (Bhama), a medical student. Krishnan begins his investigation by meeting up with Chintamani's father Veeramani (Manivannan). He is assisted in this case by a entertaining group (Roja, Vadivelu) and on the other hand there is the CID officer (Raghuvaran) who is assisted by a cop (Nasser) and then there is the Public Prosecutor (Ashish) who is keen on nailing the nine girls also known as the 'Mirchi Girls'. Is Krishnan successful in his attempts? Who is the real killer? Does Krishnan execute his own style of punishment again? All this forms the rest of the story.

Presentation:

The director has come out with an effective presentation of the subject and though the presentation was a bit weak in few aspects, the narrative was quite strong. The script has been written well and the screenplay was smoothly handled. The music was not upto the mark but the camera did its bit fairly. Editing could have been better at few points and dialogues at the court room sequence were capturing. The comedy track was effective in the serious plot. RK was professional in his performance and he did what was delivered without any unwanted emotions and silly feelings. He has potential, Bhama fitted the bill as the timid girl and the senior cast like Raghuvaran, Nasser, Manivannan, Visu, Manoj K Jayan contributed very well. The special seat given to Vadivelu was justified and he came out with his share of laughs very neatly. Overall, good performance by all.

Conclusion:

The film happens to be a remake of the Malayalam super hit 'Chintamani Kola Case' but then the Tamil flavour was quite strong in this and sometimes overshadowed the original. The first half of the film shows the background of the protagonist and the second half goes more towards the suspense angle and ultimately a gripping climax. Technically, the film has a fair share of good points but it is the suspense and the direction that keeps it going. The movie will make its money and it will be a profit grosser.

Bharatstudent Verdict: Gripping and well knit, can be watched.

Tamil cinema has not had an investigative thriller for quite some time now. For a while, there was talk of Pulan Visaaranai 2 providing one, but that is nowhere to be seen or heard of. Ellam Avan Seyal is a brave attempt to cater to a suspense loving audience. It is a remake of the hit Shaji Kailas directed Malayalam movie Chinthamani Kola Case, that had Suresh Gopi in the lead.

The premise is interesting and it might be quite a while before you are able to tell the protagonist from the antagonist. Let’s say that even the protagonist has got shades of villainy, which he puts to good use. The movie opens with a criminal lawyer, so cunning with words and evidence that he manipulates the court and justice and in the process releasing many heinous criminals from the clutches of law, even as the real victims look upon helplessly. The prosecution is desperate to stop this seemingly undefeatable defender of criminals. Of course, the lawyer also charges huge amounts for the expertise that he brings to court. But someone seems to have other plans. Within days of walking free by the expert lawyer’s skills, the criminals are found dead in mysterious circumstances. Incidents keep repeating and bodies are found every time the lawyer wins a case. The police are nonplussed; they have no clue as to what is happening.

Cut, to a medical college and the entry of a hapless first year student from a village. Her first few apprehensive footsteps in college are viewed with wily eyes by a group of 9 senior girls who call themselves the Mirchis. Ragging takes on a serious form
and the girl is found dead a few days later, her body in pieces. All eyes are on the Mirchis and there enters the lawyer to once again play the savior. He wins this time too, but what follows is something that few would expect. Solving the murder mystery forms the rest of the story.

Good material for a thriller. The script (credited to Shaji Kailas) is taut, but also demands unwavering attention, barring which you might feel that the person is being murdered twice by different people. The movie does not keep you on tenterhooks throughout, which must ideally be the case for a thriller, but it does not bore you too.

The debutante hero has done fairly well, given the rather uncharted nature of the role. Manoj. K Jayan and Ashish Vidhyarthi are as always good and the 9 Mirchi girls have done well. Vadivelu does another punching bag role and evokes a few laughs, nothing special.

At the box office, it is not expected to work wonders. But given the unquestionable suspense content and the unpredictable plot, the kind that has not been seen before in Tamil cinema, it should not do too badly, given its obviously limited budget. Those who love the thought of suspense might take a liking to this flick.

Ellam Avan Seyal – Fairly suspenseful

Ellam Avan Seyal Movie Review

Ellam Avan Seyal - Justice prevails
IndiaGlitz [Saturday, November 29, 2008]

No wonder director Shaji Kailash is revered as a successful director in Malayalam film industry. The Tamil version of his 'Chintamani Kola Case' starring RK is an engrossing tale which speaks about loopholes in Indian Legal System. The movie is an engrossing tale narrated in a racy phase, which makes the audience glued to their seats.

Shajin Kailash and scriptwriter A K Sajan have penned the script seemingly inspired by Robinhood kind of films like 'Anniyan' and 'Mudhalvan'.

A do-gooder who fights in his own style against the evils in the society and wins justice for the less privileged people is the protagonist.

The movie is about a successful criminal lawyer, who comes to the rescue of the criminals with his advocacy skills, but exterminates them the next day so as to upkeep the so-called ''Cosmic Law''. RK, who hitherto played cameo in a couple of Tamils films, has ventured to produce and enact the lead role. He needs a pat for choosing the right script. He neither gives space to romance nor pour out needless emotions. He seems to have done what his director expected him to do.

Nasser, Ashish Vidyarthy excels in their roles. They seem to have got under the skin of their character. Vadivelu in the company of Lakshmanan and Alwah Vasu evokes laughter. Playing a timid politician, who is trashed by everyone, Vadivelu is right there to tickle the funny bone in you. Debutant Bama plays a conservative and homely student well. Her expressive eyes and charming looks are her assets.

The rest including Raghuvaran, Visu, Sukanya, Manoj K Jayan play well.

The story is about a criminal lawyer L Krishnan (RK) who rescues criminals with his advocacy skills and kills them the next day. The murder mystery remains unresolved by the police. LK takes up the task of saving a group of young girls (medical students), who calls them Mirchi girls, accused of the murder of fellow student Chinthamani (Bama). A conservative Chintamani is ragged by them often in college.

Does LK succeeds in that, does he kill the girls like he kills the other criminals after rescuing them from the long arm of the law or does he discover something else regarding the same murder is what the rest of the story is all about.

Vidyasagar's music is average while the background score is loud at many places. On the whole, it is an engrossing tale which is sure to delight the audience.
