Story:

An interesting love tale, the story begins with Mahesh (Sakthi) who is all excited as his sister Keerthana's (Saranya Mohan) wedding is fixed and he is going back to his ancestral home to join his family for the occasion. All is well till he reaches home and excited by the incidents, he calls everyone and shares his love story about Saranya (Sandhya) that he met in Chennai and expresses his desire to marry her. Though the family members listen to his story, they take it rather lightly. As the wedding moments come closer, a twist in the tale comes when the elders come up with the decision of forging an alliance between Mahesh and the groom's only sister (Keerthi Chawla). Shocked by this development, Mahesh puts his foot down and gives his decision about Saranya. All this ends up in a big mess and Keerthana's marriage is cancelled, as time passes the groom's sister informs Mahesh that her wedding has been fixed elsewhere and Mahesh goes to Keerthana's prospective husband and narrates his flashback with Saranya. What happens from there forms the rest of the story.

Presentation:

The director has come up with a rather delicate and tender love tale but then the narrative has been quite weak though the presentation is good. The script has been written well and the screenplay is equally effective but then the music was not upto the mark and the cinematography could have been more sharp at few places. The dialogues were above average and though the mood of the film is alright, it is the slackened pace that really spoiled the show. Editing was poor in this one. Sakthi has been the real showstealer in this movie and he has delivered an excellent performance. Equally competent was Sandhya who fitted the role of the bubbly girl very well. Keerthi Chawla looked glamorous and Santhanam was his regular best with the comedy. The others also did their bit to contribute and the performance department has been quite convincing.

Conclusion:

The film is an interestingly knit love tale and unlike the regular mushy mushy tales, it has more of a practical outlook and the climax has been convincing. While the first half of the film is more on the lighter side with romance and happiness everywhere, it is the second half that takes a drastic turn and leads the audience to a relatively acceptable climax. The main drawback for the film is its pace which has really got dragged at key instances. If only the makers worked at tightening those lengthy scenes, it would have turned out to be a successful venture. For now, it might be a decent returner.

Bharatstudent Verdict: A different movie but slow, can be watched if you like slow movies.

Mahesh, Saranya Mattrum Palar

Starring: Sakthi Vasu, Sandhya, Keerthi Chawla, Saranya Mohan

Direction: P.V. Ravi

Music: Vidyasagar

Production: C. T. Senbagakumar

Debutant P V Ravi, a former associate of Lingusamy, has chosen the much tried path of romance, relationships and family sentiments in his uniquely titled venture Mahesh Saranya Mattrum Palar produced by Cool Productions. Unfortunately, the film fails to sustain the response elicited by the title in its content.

Mahesh’s (Sakthi) family is a big, beautiful one with many relations staying in perfect harmony with each other at Kumbakonam. He is very fond of his younger sister Keerthana (Saranya Mohan) with whom he shares an excellent rapport. Keerthana is to be united in holy matrimony and the bridegroom has been approved by all the members of the family. However, Keerthana would give a nod to the marriage only after her brother Mahesh approves of the bridegroom and for this purpose Mahesh comes to Kumbakonam from Chennai where he is studying.

Mahesh sees the bridegroom and gives his consent and the marriage preparations are in full swing. Meanwhile he starts narrating to Keerthana about how he accidentally met Saranya (Kadhal Sandhya), a stage singer, and fell in love with her. Slowly the entire family comes to know of Mahesh’s love.

Twin weddings are fixed on the same day - one for Keerthana and the other is for her bridegroom’s sister (Keerthi Chawla). On the
day of the marriage, Keerthi Chawla’s fiancĂ© runs away and the mantle unwittingly falls on Mahesh who is asked to marry Keerthi but he refuses to do so. This has a cascading effect on the wedding of Keerthana which is called off. The climax deals with whether Mahesh’s love succeeds, whether he gets married to Saranya or not and what happens to Keerthana.

Director Ravi should have worked much harder in the scenes which depict the relationship between the brother and sister. The love sequence between the lead pair is very superficial, namesake and do not make an impact at all. For Sakthi who made his screen debut through Thottal Poo Malarum, has tried to better his previous performance. Sandhya seems to be totally forlorn. Comedy efforts by Santhanam fall flat. Music by Vidyasagar is ordinary.

The director, in his attempt to do something new, has completely lost track.

Verdict - Mahesh, Saranya Mattrum Palar – one among others

Magesh, Saranya, Matrum Palar - A touchy tale that lacks pace
IndiaGlitz [Monday, December 01, 2008]

Emerging from Lingusamy's stable, debutant director Ravi has dished out a love story loaded with family sentiments.

Taking a cue from his mentor Lingusamy's maiden directorial venture 'Anandham', Ravi has etched out a good entertainer. But, a slow narration with repeatedly familiar characters and plot spoils the show.

It's an out and out Sakthi's show all the way. The young actor, who started off well with 'Thottal Poo Malarum', plays the lead role well. He essays the character of a caring brother. More than his romance with Sandhya, the scenes involving him and his sister (Saranya Mohan) manages to leave a mark on screen. Ravi deserves a pat for adding twists to the story towards the climax.

If Sakthi deserves credit for his cool performance, Sandhya is equally impressive playing the bubbly young girl. Sakthi has played the role with maturity. He is at ease before the camera and brings out the emotions aptly.

The movie has a host of characters including Saranya Mohan, Srinath, Santhanam and popular TV host Kalayana Malai Mohan doing a key role that of Sakthi's father.

At many places, the narration is so very slow that it reminds us of watching a few episodes from teary mega serials. The songs by Vidyasagar are average and it looks like his bad is continuing with this film as well.

The story begins in Kumbakonam where a joint family brims with happiness. Mahesh (Sakthi) comes back from Chennai after completing his studies, to make arrangements for his sister Keerthana's (Saranya) wedding. During the occasion, he narrates to his sister about his crush on Saranya (Sandhya), whom he met in Chennai. Everyone in the family overhears his love story and it becomes the talk of the house.

A sudden twist in Keerthana's marriage derails happiness in the family. Mahesh's romance is short-lived and at the end, he goes to prison. A twist in the climax reveals the reason behind Mahesh surrendering to the police.

Ravi needs to be patted for coming up with an original script. But had he concentrated on the pace, he could have satisfied everyone.

Review

Mahesh, Saranya Matrum Palar is a delicate love story; but the love story assumes prominence and value owing to its crackling family backdrop.

Mahesh (Sakthi) returns from the city to his ancestral home and large joint family when the wedding arrangements of his younger sister Kalpana (Charanya Mohan) are being finalized. Here, pleasantly excited by the elated and celebratory mood, Mahesh reveals his own affair with a sprightly young girl named Saranya (Sandya) to each and every member in the close-knit family. The family members do not show any signs of opposition but they do not take him seriously either. When Kalpana's wedding arrangement is final, both families, taking advantage of the mutual comfort level developed between them, decide to enter into another alliance, one between Mahesh and the groom's only sister (Keerthi Chawla). Shocked, Mahesh refuses to accept this proposal, insisting he will marry only Saranya. His refusal estranges the two families; as a result of his blunt refusal, Kalpana's wedding gets cancelled.

After some time, the loyal girl (Keerthi Chawla) informs Mahesh that her wedding has been fixed elsewhere; taking this as an optimistic cue to settle issues, Mahesh again approaches Kalpana's prospective groom, explains that Kalpana still desires to marry him and pleads that he accept Kalpana as his wife. But putting the blame for all the conflict and cancelled marriage on Mahesh, the groom heartlessly brushes Mahesh's earnest appeal aside. Finding no way to escape from the predicament, propelled by his deep care and concern for his sister's love and life, Mahesh explains the true nature of his tragic affair with Saranya in a flashback. Eventually, all things come to a happy end. What happens to Mahesh finally? Does he decide to join Saranya or does he choose Keerthi for his sister's sake? Mahesh Saranya Matrum Palar has a twist in the climax!

Emerging young hero Sakthi and Sandya, the cheery young heroine, are the pillars of Mahesh.. While Sakthi scores through his mature and measured performance, Sandya steals audiences' hearts through her sweet-girl image. Charanya Mohan, as the hero's sister, also earns a strong place in audiences' hearts. Santhanam shines with his usual style of comedy. In fact, all the characters have fitting roles to play in the plot.

Director Ravi has indeed worked well on his storyboard. Except some parts where the narrative sags a bit, the film moves smoothly and logically. To top it all, the climax that rings with definite clarity is absolutely convincing. Vidyasagar's music, particularly the re-recording, is top-class.

Realistic and devoid of unnecessary spin-offs, Mahesh, Saranya Matrum Palar strikes an emphatic chord with audiences.
