Story:

A typical story, the tale begins with Suriya (Vijaya) who hails from a small town in Tamilnadu and comes to Chennai with only one objective, to become a big hero in Kollywood. He takes up residence in a rented accommodation and that is where he chances upon his neighbour Jyothi (Keerthi). As expected, they get to become friends and the friendship eventually turns into love. All goes well until one day Suriya comes across a dying man on the road and given his good intention goes to help him. The man gives him a CD before dying and before Sooriya can realize what is happening, he is being chased by a gang of deadly goons. What does the CD contain? Will Sooriya be successful in warding off the threat? Does he manage to become a hero in films or not? All this forms the rest of the story.

Presentation:

The director has come out with an oridinary subject but then the presentation has been top notch due to the exceptional stunt and fight sequences. The narrative however lacked punch and it looked like there was a lot of amateur touch to the movie. The dialogues were alright, script was written okay and the screenplay was not upto the mark. The music could have been better, editing was raw and the camerawork was decent to capture the fast moments. Full marks to the action department, they have shown their mettle in a big way. Vijaya Chiranjeevi has done a lot of hardwork when it came to the stunts but then he really needs to work on his emotional expressions if he is looking at a long term career. Keerthi Chawla looked cute and did her bit as a glamour doll without many issues. The others contributed to the film in their own way but then not much valuable to the film.

Conclusion:

The makers have spent a considerable amount and energy in showcasing the physical prowess of the hero but then as an actor, one needs to be good in all departments. That was not to be seen here, while the first half of the film goes about with the romance and the regular hardships, the second half takes an action packed turn and the climax is quite predictable. Content and quality should have been taken care of just like the action and stunt departments. The film might turn out to be an average fare.

Bharatstudent Verdict : A passable entertainer, can be watched if nothing to do.

Some things are bound to stay here - no matter if India sends a rocket to moon or Saturn or we make peace with Pakistan - like a gym toned young man in his early twenties bashing bad men and saving the nation from the perils of terror, in Tamil movies of course. Well, that is the hint. Surya is all about how a young man with dreams of making it big in movies, saves the nation, read Tamil Nadu, from the vicious hands of terrorists when heavily armed cops watch helplessly.

Debutant Vijaya Chiranjeevi - that is two times victory in a single name, in Tamil and Telugu, too much of a victory sentiment we say - is full of beans and prances around knocking down villains and showing off his hard-earned fighting skills, after all he’s the son of the renowned stunt master Jaguar Thangam, who also has directed the movie. If that’s to proclaim his fighting skills, there is an extended lip lock with Keerrthi Chawla, as if to announce the arrival of a South Indian Emran Hashmi.

The movie defies pretty much everything - common sense and logic predominantly being in the forefront. The already done-to-death plot is further butchered by an excuse for a screenplay coupled with some migraine-inducing sound camouflaged in the name of music.

As if to provide respite from the atrociously unimaginative plot, the director has inserted Mayilsamy’s track in the name of comedy. Now if only there was comedy in the track except for its name

There was just one sense prevailing from the beginning to the end of the movie – a sense of entrapment. It is not often that movies are given no stars, usually there is something to appreciate, but unfortunately such a verdict has been necessitated twice in the same week, this being the second.

Verdict – Atrocious!

Star – 0

Review

It is comparatively easy for a star-kid to make it big in cinema compared to a fresher with no links or godfathers in the industry. Vijaya Chiranjeevi (son of Jaguar Thangam, the popular stunt master with a formidable reputation) is the hero in Sooriya with story, screenplay, dialogues direction by (you guessed it) Jaguar Thangam! With a role that gives him ample scope to present the best of his talent, his performance has immensely satisfied his father.

Sooriya (Vijay Chiranjeevi), a naïve youth comes from his village to Chennai with dreams of becoming a hero in Kollywood. Residing in a rented apartment, he tolerates and overcomes many difficulties and inconveniences to achieve his goal. He becomes friendly with Jyothi (Keerthi Chawla) residing in the adjoining residential block. Their casual chats and friendship predictably develop into mutual affinity, then love.

While travelling, Sooriya spots a dying man alone on a deserted street. Good Samaritan Sooriya tries to help the stranger, but is unable to save his life. The dying stranger hands over a CD to Sooriya.

Mystified and stunned, Sooriya keeps the CD, clueless about what to do next. But after he gets the CD, a bunch of menacing thugs keep chasing him wherever he goes and his life is in danger. What happens next? Does Sooriya manage to escape from the dangers he faces? How does he confront them? What dangerous information does the CD contain? Does Sooriya live long enough to hand over the CD to the police? What does he finally become - a reel hero, a real hero or just a forgotten unclaimed body? There is a whole lot of action and masala that unravel in the ensuing portions of Sooriya. Don't miss it!

Perfect hero material in terms of physique and performance, Vijaya Chiranjeevi does extremely well in the stunt sequences. The director has provided many long stunt-oriented scenes to showcase Vijaya Chiranjeevi's talents and skills. We get to see almost all kinds of martial arts and droves of stunt artists in Sooriya. However, the film lacks the punch and heroism required from a full-fledged hero and Vijaya Chiranjeevi looks too young to do it all. Heroine Keerthi Chawla does nothing more than romancing the hero.

Sooriya has proved to be the appropriate launch pad for stunt master Jaguar Thangam's son Vijay Chiranjeevi. But the story lacks polish; so the script and screenplay lack lustre. To shine as a director, Jaguar needs to do a lot of homework. Music is by Jerome Pushparaj.

Sooriya, a ticket for Vijay Chiranjeevi's entry to glamorous tinselville, aptly serves its purpose.
