Review

Story

Balu (Varun Sandesh) is son of lovable middleclass couple (Prakash Raj & Jayasudha). Swapna (Sweta Basu Prasad) is the daughter of a strict and rich father. Both of them study in a residential college located at a small town of Godavari district. Balu and Swapna fall in love. Swapna is withdrawn from the residential school because her father comes to know about her love. The rest of the story is all about how Balu and Swapna try to get back to each other.

Artists Performance

koth bangaru lokamMain leads: Varun Sandesh shows improvement in this film compared to his debut in Happy Days. He suited the character of the film very well and he needs to work strongly on getting diction right. His boyish charm wins you over. Sweta Basu Prasad (award winning child actress from Iqbal film) is very good and she perfects her role with her childlike innocent look. However, there is a bit of inconsistency in the dubbing in the initial part of the film.

kotha bangaru lokamOther actors: Jayasudha and Prakash Raj play a perfect couple like they did in Bommarillu film. However, Jayasudha's role is more meaningful and vital in this film. Ahuti Prasad is good as the father of heroine. Rao Ramesh who impressed everybody in his radical portrayal in Gamyam did the key character of a lecturer in the film. He is very good though he appears to have gone little over board in the class room scenes. This film has lots of fresh faces as friends of hero and heroine. And all of them are natural and add some value to the film. Brahmanandam character offers variety.

Technical departments

koth bangaru lokamStory - screenplay - direction: Story of the film is about parenting. This film has got an arresting narration and intelligent screenplay in the second half. The debutant director Srikanth Addala comes up with a script that offers lot of freshness. There are many scenes and situations in the film which would have gone the clichéd way, but the director makes sure that he avoids clichéd and melodramatic scenes. He could able to conceive the emotional scenes in the second half excellently. Dil Raju offers another gem of a director in the form of Srikanth Addala through Kotha Bangaram Lokam after giving us Sukumar (Arya) and Bhaskar (Bommarillu).

kotha bangaru lokamCinematography: I stopped writing separate paragraphs for individual technical departments in my reviews long back. But I think Chota K Naidu's work in this film deserve a separate para. I see Tamil cinematographers ruling the Telugu film industry and wondered why Telugu cinematographers can't come up with such stuff. Today I felt really happy that Chota K Naidu gave a fitting reply to everybody that a Telugu cinematographer can come up with a fabulous stuff. The entire film is like picture postcard photography. You can take any frame in the film and send it as a postcard. The colors and lighting used for the film are highly pleasing to your eyes. The way he has shown the Godavari bridge is entirely different from what we have seen in the earlier films.

koth bangaru lokamOther departments: Music of the film is exceptionally great. Mickey J Meyer repeats his magic after Happy Days with this film. The background music and re-recording of the film is equally good. Dialogues by the director Srikanth Addala are very good. Marthand K Venkatesh's editing is smooth. Artwork by Prakash is nice. The CG work and the DI work by Prime Focus also deserve a special mention. Producer Dil Raju made sure that he spends lot of money and quality time on this film. He continues his marathon of classic hits after Arya and Bommarillu with this film.

kotha bangaru lokamAnalysis: First of the film is decent and the second half is excellent. Like Bommarillu, this film too deals with the problem of parents and kids. In that film, they tried to balance between parents and kids, this film takes some bias towards parents as the kids in this film are doing intermediate unlike the graduates in Bommarillu. If Happy Days makes you feel nostalgic about your engineering college days, KBL will make you feel nostalgic about your intermediate days in a residential college. This film sends good message out to the society. The only thing I did not like in the entire film is that the filmmaker has shown Ahuti Prasad (father of the girl) as a bakra. Coming to my rating statistics, my last 4 rated film was Nuvvostanante Nenoddantana (January 2005), my last 4.5 rated film was Bommarillu (August 2006) and my last 3.5 rated film was Happy Days (September 2007). Kotha Bangaru Lokam film deserves a rating of 4. Go, watch the film and pamper yourself..

It's a teenage love story retold on silver screen of Tollywood but in different fashion. Let us see how the difference is felt.

Story:
Balu (Varun) finds the beautiful girl Swapna (Swetha) in his college and falls in love at first sight. The love reciprocation from Swapna also holds positive and the saga continues for some time till that gets revealed to the principal of the college.

Swapna's father (Ahuti Prasad) knows about the love story and makes his daughter sit at home and study. On the other side, Balu too will go to home. He keeps on attempting to hunt for the hereabouts of Swapna along with his friends.

What happens to Balu who went into deep love with Swapna. Will they unite again? That forms the rest of the story.

Performances:
Varun Sandesh did his best in his first solo flick. But still he needs to work on his diction. Expressions wise he scored well.

New actress Swaetha Basu Prasad has aptly grooved in the role of teenage girl. She did her best but eventually she may settle down in sister roles than that of heroine due to her height constraint and no-oomph levels.

Ahuti Prasad entertained well with his dialogue delivery that reminds of his role in Chandamama. Prakash Raj is ok in his father role that's reserved and Jayasudha is apt in her mother role. She looks younger when compared to her previous films.

Brahmanandam couldn't spill any laughs due to the serious role given for him.

Coming to technical departments, music stands outstanding and while cinematography deserves right mention. Editing suffered little hiccups in second half. The director Srikanth Addala dished out a sensible film that stands to be an attention puller.

Best Parts:
Wrist watch sentiment
Ahuti Prasad's diction
Lyrical beauty
Music
Dialogues
Story Line
Message
Entertainment

Songs:
All the songs sounded the best and the number 'Confusion…confusion..' was shot exhaustively in Rajahmundry exploiting the locations Godavari Bridge, Devi Chowk, Pushkar Ghat, Asoka Talkies, Mallikarjuna Swamy temple and many more. Out of the routine Hyderabad and Vizag, it proves to be a new treat for the eyes with Rajahmundry.

Nijamga Nenenaa..was canned in average style. It could have been better.

'Nenani Neevani..' is touching to eyes as well. The montage song 'Nee Prasnalu neevi' is also average but situationally fitting.

'Kalasaalalo..' is pictured in interesting fashion.

Analysis:
It's a movie for teens in precise, entertainment lovers to be particular and all Telugu audiences on a whole. The tender intermediate age and its ectopic beats are rightly brought on to the celluloid with life in it. It cannot be compared to 'Chitram' or 'Bommarillu' in direct terms but holds uniqueness in clarity of thought and expression by the director on those standards.

The conviction in drama hasn't missed. The tangles in the plot are rightly unknotted at last. The balance of practicality and creative freedom is seen on a whole. The movie stands out to be the best for A class audiences and youngsters in all centers.

First half of the movie and second half go interesting while sentiment dominates the latter. The story line is old but the way of expression made all the difference.
It's worth watching.

Story:

The young guy Balu (Varun Sandesh) falls in love with a fresher Swapna (Swetha Basu Prasad) in his college. Love starts from the other end as well. Balu is the daring son of his mother (Jayasudha) and father (Prakash Raj). Father gives full sort of freedom to his son and at the same time loves to guard him and see him successful. Swapna's father (Ahuthi Prasad) is a serious man with strictness in his blood. He come sto know about the love matter of his daughter and hence brings her home. But still Balu goes close to Swapna and the latter elopes. But after four years Balu goes successful in his studies and Swapna's father feels that his daughter was eloped with him. But Swapna didn't run away with Balu. What happened to her? That forms a minor twist at last.

Presentation:

Varun Sandesh is apt in his character and resembled Nagarjuna's style of diction in some scenes. Swetha is ok in teenage role and acted with required energy. Ahuthi Prasad, Vinay Prasad and Rao Ramesh entertained on a whole with their style of diction and carrying the roles. Music by Micki J Mayor is interesting and cinematography by Chota K Naidu is also worth mentioning. Direction is good and production values are appropriate.

Conclusion:

The sense and sensibility of the movie deserve great mention. It's made with attention to detail and once again Dil Raju proved that his banner can give another Bommarillu with no resemblances to it. The ulterior message packed up with entertainment has shown a thin line of resemblance between the styles of Bommarillu Bhaskar and Addala Srikanth. To sum up, the movie entertains all sets of audiences and appeals for youth and teens for sure.

Most of the debutant directors choose love subjects as they strongly feel that they can handle the story easily. However, it is not that easy to portray love subjects. Srikanth Addala has also chosen a teenage love story as his subject. It is quite a delicate subject and any small mistake in dealing with the story would result in causing huge loss to the producer, especially for a person like Dil Raju. It is not just a monetary loss but it would be the prestige and reputation. Surprisingly, the director has done a balanced job and has made it a memorable love story along the lines of Maro Charitra. Of course, he has given a good twist in the climax which is beyond the imagination of the audiences.

Balu (Varun Sandesh) is the only son of his parents (Prakash Raj and Jayasudha). Incidentally, Balu's parents had a love marriage. Balu's father never treated him as his son but like a friend. He gave him complete freedom in all respects. After completion of his SSC, Balu got admission in a junior college and stays in the hostel. Swapna (Swetha) is the daughter of a landlord (Ahuti Prasad). Like many teenage boys and girls, they too get attracted to each other. However, they cannot decide whether theirs is an attraction or love. When there are holidays, both Swapna and Balu decide to note down as to how many times they remembered each other and to their surprise they realise that each of them times they remember one another. They finally confirm that they are in love. Once, the girls go on an outing from hostel and Balu jumps the boundary wall and join Swapna. Incidentally, some person clicks their photograph and get it published in the newspaper. The principal sends away Balu and directs him to bring his father to obtain hall ticket for the exam. Swapna's father who sees the photographs takes away his daughter. Now the struggle between the souls start. Balu makes several efforts to find out Swapna's address but cannot trace it. However, Swapna gets the address of Balu and writes down a letter to him. Somehow, both of them again meet during the exam time. Pulling courage, Balu meets Swapna's father and boldly explains his love towards Swapna. Later, Swapna's father decides to marry her to someone. Noticing the change in Balu, his mother tries to find out the problem but fails to know anything. Accidentally, Balu's friend Raga Sudha (Sushma) reveals his love story to Balu's father. At that time Swapna decides to elope with Balu. However, the latter could not meet her as Balu's father died in an accident. His father's death makes Balu make a commitment that he would groom himself the way his father had dreamt of. He completes his engineering course. When he is about to take his degree, Swapna's father accidentally meets Balu in a railway station. Then Balu realises that Swapna is not with either of them. In the climax, Balu's mother reveals that she had kept Swapna in their lecturer's custody and had made her to complete her engineering too. The film ends on a happy note with the union of Balu and Swapna.

PLUS:

The director needs compliments for extracting the talents in the artistes. His excellent screenplay, memorable taking, directorial abilities could be seen in each frame of the film. It is definitely a director's film and the artistes, the hero being an upcoming artiste, the heroine a debutant, are moulded well. The entire film revolves around these two characters. They are fantastically supported by Ahuti Prasad's character. Once again Prakashraj has played a memorable character in the role of a father. It is like a role model for all the teenage children. Jayasudha, known for her natural acting talents, has done justice to her role. Brahmanandam's comedy brings instant relief at times like comic tonic. Music by Mickey J. Meyer is melodious and the tunes are quite novel. There is no need for a special mention when the camera is handled by a senior cinematographer like Chota K Naidu. He has captured not only the feelings of the artistes but also portrayed the natural beauty of Konaseema with his camera. Editing by Marthand K Venkatesh has proved his seniority with not a scene left as unnecessary.

MINUS:

Though the director has brought out the love story in an excellent manner, he might have forgotten that the boys and girls hostels will generally be separate and there won't be a chance for their union. At the same time though the character of Rao Ramesh helps in the nice movement of the story, he gives a wrong picture that lecturers encourage love between teenagers. Of course, there might be some such instances where the lecturers encourage the talented students in all respects. The director has appeared to have lost grip on the subject after the interval with some long scenes, they are unavoidable as to show how the lovers feel the separation. But for few lapses here and there, the minus points in the film are minimal.

REMARKS:

Instead of going to foreign locales, the director has penned a story which has enabled the producer to show the greenery and the beauty of Konaseema and the village atmosphere. Really the first song in the film take the audiences to their childhood, especially those who move around in those localities like Rajahmundry, Kasimkota and other Konaseema areas. The film would remain memorable for Varun Sandesh in his career. Though there were gossips that some XYZ was planning to remake Maro Charitra with the same hero, there is no need for such film now as Kotha Bangaru Lokam has given the same feel to the audiences.
